How to tell a good law study app

Almost every study app promises success. Whether it helps depends on a few testable points. Ask these questions of any app, including ours:

  1. Does it make you retrieve from memory, or do you mostly read?
  2. Does it schedule reviews at growing intervals?
  3. Does it mix topics, or do you always practise one chapter at a time?
  4. Does it train cases and the expert-opinion style, not just definitions?
  5. Does it cover the whole compulsory syllabus, including state law?
  6. Are there exams under exam conditions, graded on the point scale?
  7. What does the full scope cost, and which parts are extra?

The first three points are the best researched. Roediger and Karpicke (2006) showed the value of self-testing, Cepeda and colleagues (2006) the value of spaced review, Rohrer and Taylor (2007) the value of mixed practice.

What studying looks like day to day

The Today page shows what is due each day: cards to review, new lessons and a mixed session across all subjects. “Continue where you left off” gets you straight back in, and a daily goal and study reminder help you keep going.

For short breaks there is Quick 10: ten cards in about two minutes. For longer sessions there is the case trainer, where you decide statement by statement in the order of the analysis. And when you want to write an exam, you start the simulation with a countdown.

Mistakes do not just vanish. The error log shows why you got something wrong, and “Weak topics” lets you practise exactly where you still struggle. That is what Ericsson described as deliberate practice: working at the edge of your ability.

Who Lexxington is for

Lexxington is built for students who want one tool from first semester to the state exam. The semester plan orders the material by where you are in your degree, and you choose state law by your federal state.

If you mainly want to read long textbook chapters, an app is the wrong tool. If you want to practise briefly every day and recall reliably what you learned, it is the right one.

Switch or combine

You do not have to give anything up to try Lexxington. Many students combine several tools. Try the app for seven days and then decide what fits the way you study.

A note on fairness: Jurafuchs is a brand of another provider. Lexxington is not affiliated with that provider. For features and prices of other apps, only their own information applies.
